Overview

The solo work is described as a blend of storytelling and stand-up. Aki tells the story of how her family journeyed from Japan to the American South in an exploration of secrets, lessons, and “how our stories get told.”

To Free a Mockingbird has been developed by Kate Robards, Michael Fling, SheNYC, and Seth Barrish.

About Grace Aki

GRACE AKI (she/her) is a New York City-based playwright from Georgia. From Japanese and American Southern roots, Grace has always been a storyteller. Before graduating high school, she had already hosted several shows for a travel series, hosted for FRIDAYS on Cartoon Network, became an award-winning mime, and failed algebra three times. Grace is the reigning Miss North Georgia Agricultural Fair Queen and graduate of Upright Citizen’s Brigade and The Barrow Group’s respective performing programs. It was under the training of Seth Barrish (Mike Birbiglia’s The Old Man and the Pool) that she developed a solo play entitled To Free a Mockingbird.
She’s been a copywriter for Broadway social media accounts like POTUS, & Juliet and more. Presently she hosts the stand-up show SWEET MEAT, the storytelling podcast ‘Tell Me on a Sunday’ on the Broadway Podcast Network, and the daily Broadway News for Broadway Radio. As a visual artist, she opens her new photography and painting exhibit in December at Compare CollectiveGrace is a pansexual, bipolar, multiracial canned salmon enthusiast.
